Vernon County Sheriff's Report (2024)

Sheriff Roy Torgerson reports the following ongoing activities for the year and narrative excerpts from the week ending June 15

6/9 A citizen reported his checkbook was stolen, and someone cashed a check for $650. The sheriff’s office investigated and identified a suspect. The suspect was coincidentally arrested for an outstanding Vernon County felony warrant in La Crosse County a few days later, and once she was taken to the Vernon County Detention Center, she was charged with Theft of Movable Property. The offender was given a $200 recognizance bond for the theft charge.

6/9 The Zzip Stop in the village of Genoa reported someone left the gas station without paying for their gas. The total was $41.78. A deputy responded and located the vehicle on Goose Island. It was determined to be a mistake, and the driver returned to the gas station to pay for the fuel.

6/10 Jerry Geiger, Combined Locks, struck a deer while driving southbound on State Highway 131, town of Kickapoo. Geiger did not report any injuries. The vehicle was towed due to disabling damage.

6/10 A deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on County Road EE in the town of Greenwood. The driver received a citation for failure to obey a stop sign. A short time later, the same deputy conducted another traffic stop on County Road EE. The driver was cited for failure to obey a stop sign and operating without a license.

6/11 A deputy conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on Barstad Road in the town of Viroqua. The driver was cited for failure to obey a stop sign.

6/11 A citizen reported someone was burning tires and plastic at a residence on 23rd Court in the town of Whitestown. When a deputy arrived, he saw tires actively burning in a pile. The owner of the property was issued a citation for Burn Garbage, Trash, or Refuse at Any Time.

6/11 Jack Brunslik, Viroqua, was stopped facing eastbound on US Highway 14, city of Westby, waiting for a vehicle in front of him to turn left. David Long, Viola, struck the rear of Brunslik’s vehicle. Brunslik’s vehicle received minor damage, and Long’s vehicle received functional damage. Neither vehicle was towed. No injuries were reported.

6/12 The Zzip Stop in the village of Genoa reported someone failed to pay for their gas in the amount of $22.11. A deputy made contact with the owner of the vehicle, who returned to the gas station and paid for the gas.

6/13 The sheriff’s office was notified of four to five pigs roaming a property on County Road SS in the town of Liberty. The caller reported the pigs had done tremendous damage to the pine forest. The owner of the pigs has yet to be identified.

6/13 The Caledonia Police Department reported a male violated a restraining order by attempting third-party contact with the petitioner. Probation and Parole placed a hold on the offender. A deputy responded to the residence in the city of Westby and took the offender into custody.

6/14 Kwik Trip in the city of Viroqua reported a truck had been parked at a gas pump for over an hour and a half, and no one had exited the truck. A deputy responded with a Viroqua police officer and located a male asleep in the truck. The male was subsequently arrested for Operating While Under the Influence. He was released to a responsible party.

6/14 The sheriff’s office was notified of dogs running on someone’s property on Green Acres Road in the town of Franklin. This was a recurring issue, so the dog owner was issued a citation for animals running at large.

6/14 Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper Marcus Meurer struck a deer with his squad vehicle while he was driving westbound on US Highway 14 in the town of Kickapoo. Trooper Meurer did not report any injuries. The vehicle received functional damage and was not towed.

6/15 Vicki Brueggen, Westby, was traveling eastbound on US Highway 14, town of Hamburg. Brueggen reported swerving for an unknown object. The vehicle traveled straight off the road and into the ditch, striking and breaking a traffic sign. The vehicle continued down into the ditch and was eventually able to drive out of the ditch and back onto the roadway. Brueggen did not report any injuries. The vehicle received functional damage and was not towed.

6/15 Bryan Cessford, West Salem, struck a deer while driving westbound on US Highway 14, town of Hamburg. No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed due to disabling damage.
