The bureau, In its latest ice report, said: "Our correlation charts show relatively early opening dates throughout the Great Lakes, but owing to the limited ice accumulation this winter, port opening dates will be dependent primarily on economic factors." The report estimated opening dates at Cleveland March 22, Detroit March 23, Alpena March 24, Straits of Mackinac March 30, Buffalo April 3, Seaway April 7, Soo April 9, Marquette April 10, Duluth April 11. The bureau said that ice coverage on Lakes Superior, Michigan and Huron ranges between 20 and 30 per cent and 'consists mostly of drift ice with fast ice confined to shallow bays and harbors. Clair is about 90 per cent covered with 30 per cent face ice along the northern and eastern shores, the bureau said. Lake Erie coverage ranges between 60 and 70 per cent mostly drift ice with some fast ice along the northeastern and southeastern shores.
