Chlorine-based DUWL disinfectant leads to a different microbial composition of water derived biofilms compared to H2O2-based chemical disinfectants in vitro

Background Biofilm formation in dental unit waterlines (DUWL) may lead to health risks for dental staff and patients. Therefore, dental unit waterlines need to be disinfected, for instance by using chemical disinfectants. However, the application of chemical disinfectants may lead to the selection of specific microorganisms. Therefore, the aim of our study was to assess the microbial composition of water-derived biofilms, after a continuous exposure to maintenance doses of commercially available chemical disinfectants, in vitro. Methods The AAA-model was used to grow water derived biofilms. The biofilms were subjected to the maintenance dose of each disinfectant. Mycobacteria in water, feedstocks and food: analysis of publications

Papers on mycobacteria in food, feed and water, published between 1945 and 2010 and indexed in the database Web of Science ® (Thomson Reuters) were ranked according to authors, institutions, countries and source titles. The total number of papers on mycobacteria and food and mycobacteria and water were 1486 and 1419, respectively. More than 40% of papers have been published in the last five years. In addition to publications in peer reviewed journals the archives of ProMED-mail and the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed of the European Union were also searched. It is evident that much attention is being paid to mycobacteria in food, feed and water as they likely pose a public health risk. There is no doubt that Mycobacterium bovis, a known member of the obligatorily pathogenic group of mycobacteria, can be shed in milk and can cause tuberculosis as a food pathogen. Introduction: Biofilms within dental-unit waterlines (DUWLs) are acknowledged sources of contamination in the dental clinical environment and affect the quality of clinical treatment water. As a standard for reducing exposure to potentially harmful microorganisms, the Department of Health (DoH), UK suggests that water discharged from DUWL should contain 100 to 200 CFU/mL. However, local audits suggest that the quality of clinical treatment water often fails to meet the standards required. Concentration and species composition of aerobic and facultatively anaerobic bacteria released to the air of a dental operation area before and after disinfection of dental unit waterlines

Bacteriological air sampling was conducted at 25 dental units during restorative treatment sessions before and after disinfection of dental unit waterlines (DUWL) with hydrogen peroxide. Air samples for determining the concentration and species composition of aerobic and facultatively anaerobic bacteria were collected with the portable Reuter Centrifugal Sampler (RCS Plus) in the dental operation area close to patient's mouth. Large concentrations of airborne bacteria in the range of 0.35-40.08 x 10(3) cfu/m(3) (median = 1.63 x 10(3) cfu/m(3)) were recorded before DUWL disinfection. After disinfection, the concentrations were significantly lower (p<0.05), ranging from 0.51-3.82 x 10(3) cfu/m(3) (median = 0.9 x 10(3) cfu/m(3)). Introduction: Bio-aerosols are airborne particles that contain bacteria, viruses and fungi, or originate from living organisms, which possess potential for transmitting infections in healthcare settings including dental clinics due to their ability to lodge in the smaller air passages of the lungs. Many dental procedures that use mechanical instrumentation have the potential to create contaminated aerosols and splatter. These aerosols represent an infection hazard to the dental team and other patients due to their gross contamination with microorganisms and body fluids. Objective: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the bacterial aerosol contamination during dental procedures in the dental operatory. Materials and Methods: 60 patients with mild to moderate gingivitis attending outpatient department of Periodontics were included after obtaining consent. Settle plate method employing 10% sheep blood agar plates was used to collect the aerosols at three standardized locations. The sampled blood agar plates were transported immediately to the Department of Microbiology for: 1. Identification of bacterial colonies as per standard procedures. 2. Counting the number of colonies formed on blood agar plates using colony counter unit. Results: Alpha hemolytic Streptococci (81.67%) were the predominant bacteria isolated followed by Micrococcus (38.89%). Staphylococcus aureus was isolated in 30% among which 10 isolates (18.5%) were methicillin resistant. Plates placed on the patient’s chest area showed highest mean colony count of 105.3 CFU/ plate, plates on dental tray showed 68.38 CFU/plate and plates placed 6 inches away from patient’s mouth showed 40.12 CFU/plate. Conclusion: To minimise the risk posed by dental aerosols it is imperative to implement control measures aiming to reduce the generation and exposure to microbial aerosols in dental clinics.
